It’s often said that good design takes time, money, or (and ideally) both. This is because strong rooms require layering. This isn’t the same as clutter, and watching Ksenya Malina, the Founder and Principal of Time & Place Interiors, pull pieces from our shelves for her edit reminded us why. Ksenya has a special gift for bringing together elements with diverse backgrounds, materiality, and texture in a way where each feels more alive as a result. In the end, it’s what beautiful rooms are made of.

Ksenya: I believe in bringing beauty into the everyday. As an interior decorator, I help people create the background for living their best lives. My specialty is designing livable spaces with vintage, antiques, and global artisan decor: they tell a story that transcends the here and now, making a space feel special. I'm not afraid of a bit of patina; it's a celebration of experiences.

The best things in a home are often stumbled upon by chance, and represent different eras and corners of the world. At Quittner, I came across wonderful finds, both old and new, that can be layered together in a unique space that is equal parts special and comforting.

The Edit

• Industrial floor lamp: Lighting is jewelry for the home. I love the industrial patina on this lamp, and the deep glow of the green shade. (available in-store)

• Painted black rocking chair: An occasional chair gives a room instant personality. I like to position one under a work of art or next to a sideboard to create a transition. (sold)

• West African natural mudcloth: Textiles like throws are perfect for adding a layer of visual comfort. I picked up one of these to use as a tablecloth in my own home.

• Vintage wire basket: A great trick for reducing clutter is to display multiples in a confined space with a natural border, such as in a basket. I filled this one with a set of antique bowling balls and a batch of scented lavender.

• Antique Box: I love using an antique storage piece as a side table or nightstand, doing double duty as organization plus style. (available in-store)

• Hand blown glass decanter set: Your overnight guests will appreciate the thoughtful touch. This one is made in Beacon, NY.

• Rustic linen tea towel: Mindful eating means setting a place. Pull out your cloth napkins every once in a while, even for everyday meals.
