“Thomas Cole was born in England in 1801 and emigrated to the United States seventeen years later. He enjoyed remarkable success as a professional artist in the young nation, beginning in 1825 when he made his first sketching trip to the Catskill Mountains and sold his first paintings in New York City. Founder of the art movement known today as the Hudson River School, Cole kept a journal, which he titled Thoughts & Occurrences, from 1834 until shortly before his death in 1848.” — The Thomas Cole National Historic Site
